Live, Work, Play

Live

The choices are plentiful; marsh, deep water, oceanfront or riverfront. These are just a few of the options for your home in the Charleston Lowcountry. In addition to the coastal barrier islands of Kiawah, Seabrook, Johns and Wadmalaw, these are only part of a large family of islands, and mainland communities that make up the greater Charleston area.

Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island to the north, and nearby James Island and Folly Beach, West Ashley and North Charleston are also part of the mix. Of course, Charleston's historic downtown peninsula (just 30 minutes away) is the centerpiece of the story. Where you fit in is up to you.

Work

While Charleston diligently works to preserve its rich, historic charm, the greater Charleston area continues to grow with new and expanding businesses, diverse industry sectors, medical services, (including a thriving, major medical university) and several fast-growing healthcare systems. The $5.7 billion/per year tourism industry is a major player in the Area's success. The military and the technology-related, knowledge-based industries are flourishing, too - as is the Port of Charleston, which is the largest containerized cargo port on the South Atlantic and Gulf Coast.

Charleston also serves as the base for an increasing number of national and international manufacturers. Such growth provides job opportunities and a healthy entrepreneurial climate for residents and newcomers alike.

Play

Here we live well, work hard, and play often. Recognized as a top destination for food, fun, arts and educational activities, shopping, romance, boating and golf, there is bound to be something for everyone in Charleston.

Visitors savor the historic homes, plantations, forts and walking tours. Visual and performing arts thrive. There's live music of any genre in cozy lounges, large theaters and outdoor sports complexes, which host local teams and internationally known athletes. Parks, greenways and waterways are open for biking, paddling, surfing and more. The opportunities keep our events calendar filled year-round. While it's easy to be a tourist in your own town, it's just as tempting to stay on the porch and relish a lazy afternoon at home-sweet-home.
