A variety of local museums, historical gardens and plantations showcase everything from ancient artifacts from early Charleston civilizations to maritime history to contemporary art. Each year, several million people explore the museums of Charleston to trace the roots of our fascinating history and discover how our past, present, and future all come together.

Downtown Charleston houses 15 museums and historic sites along a one mile block of the french quarter neighborhood. This area has been dubbed "Museum Mile" and offers an impressive amount of culture and history in just one tiny section of the city. These sites include:
